on Thursday 6th June. The event starts at 12:00.
Where the Bonnie Heather Grows offers a creative exploration inspired by a remarkable glass plate negative photographic series by photographer John Vickers (1916-1976). Drawing directly from the University of Bristol Theatre Collection, Artist in Residence Bobby Joynes resurrects this nearly century-old series using modern technological methods.
Originally captured by Vickers in monochrome, these images have weathered through the passage of time and bear the marks of water damage and mould infestation that affected them in the decades before they arrived at the Collection. Yet, far from diminishing their allure, this process of decay has imparted a hauntingly beautiful transformation upon the photographs, prompting reflection on the aesthetics of destruction versus preservation.
Within this immersive experience, attendees will encounter not only Vickers' evocative originals but also a compelling response series crafted by Bobby Joynes. Delving into the symbiotic relationship between inspiration and creation, Joynes' contemporary photographs add layers of interpretation and dialogue to the space.
Located in Seminar 3.5 of the Wickham Theatre, the installation invites visitors to engage for up to 15 minutes, with the flexibility to explore at their own pace. Open to audiences from 12:00 to 15:30, we recommend that you aim to arrive either at 12:00, 13:00, 14:00 or 15:00 or at half past of any of the hours.
