Additional information
Airbus formed at Gordano School in Portishead during 1988 when singer / songwriter Nick Davidge invited guitarist James Childs to jam during lunch breaks. Fuelled by a mutual interest in rock music, the two began trading riffs and writing songs.
Nick and James were soon joined by drummer Chris Fielden, who provided a solid backbeat, and bassist Simon Hedges, who contributed his unique style.
Airbus’s expressive and experimental sound quickly began to receive acclaim in both local and national press.
"...with chorus's that come crashing in like the sound of God. This one will have the D.J.’s slavering… …one of the best new bands this year." The Face
"….tight and energetic, with hooks galore, all drawn together by a phenomenal rhythm section." Venue
Since their successful activity in the ’90s – appearing on HTV's First Cut, collaborating with peers Portishead on their single ‘Sourtimes’, signing to publishing giants BMG (now Universal Music Publishing Ltd.) and playing Glastonbury Music Festival – the band have continued to work together in the studio, revisiting older songs and working on brand new material.
Although appreciative of their successes in the UK, Airbus expanded their sites to include America. In the early noughties, they relocated to Los Angeles to explore new opportunities and worked with several producers, most notably Richard Dashut who produced Fleetwood Mac's Rumours.
Early in 2017, the band released a remastered version of their album Ghosts on Bristol Archive Records.
“The four piece group from Portishead definitely contributed to shaping what is now known as the Bristol sound with their domineering live presence and stellar reputation as professionals in their field. The band’s multi-instrumentation is ever present as they push and pull the boundaries of contemporary British rock music.” Bristol Archive Records
Ghosts received excellent reviews in the press and online.
"Recorded in their basement studio on ancient analogue equipment, it's a fittingly haunted and haunting creation." The Big Issue
“Perhaps typically for a band based in Bristol, Airbus use their fair share of trip-hop effects to enhance their musical palette. Crucially though, they add a rockier, almost grunge-like angle, which perhaps make them pioneers in this field.” Amazon USA editorial review
Later in 2017, Airbus released the album Primitive Carnival and undertook a European tour, culminating in a sell-out show at Bristol’s prestigious Bierkeller.
Reviewer, Ed Furniss said, “This screaming record must beat anything released by a British rock band this year. That may sound over the top but singer Nick Davidge leaps from quiet verse to tonsil-shredding chorus with real skill and is backed up by an experimental-style rhythm section.”
Amazon customer, Ben Hewitt said, “I was amazed at this. I bought it because I remembered seeing them live years ago and thought they were amazing back then. It still remains a timeless classic to me and, in my humble opinion, showcases what an electric guitar band should sound like.”
In 2020, Airbus started work on You, an album featuring songs written and recorded in the late ’90s. The record is currently receiving positive reviews and radio play.
Reviewer, CJ Warren said, “‘Simplicity is the mother of all pop’ is a universal Airbus proudly extol and display in frankly gorgeous tracks. ‘Save Yourself’ employs wiry guitar licks and spaced-out sounds but never forgets to be entertaining and thus memorable. Track two, ‘I’, is just gorgeous. Single to the charts please, driver.”
The band are currently in the studio, working on their next album, titled Imperial Gunpowder. They hope to be able to tour again soon. See less
