"Free entry! MAYK and Dhaqan Collective present an experimental immersive happening inside a stationary taxi. Free from your preoccupation with time and destination, you sit back and absorb the driver’s anecdotes, pearls of Somali wisdom and local knowledge, the transportative blast of the radio, and for the first time truly appreciate this cross-cultural capsule we summon from our phones. What can a taxi ride tell you about a city?
Step into the intimate world of Bristol’s cab drivers in The People’s Carriage – a captivating immersive sound and light installation that traces their journeys across the city. Through music, personal narratives, and the varying shades of passenger encounters, this project uncovers Bristol’s many layers, through the voices of those who know it's streets best.
Duration: 35 minutes
Free bookable time slots: 2pm - 8pm
Audiences will experience the work from inside a stationary taxi.
Tea & coffee will be available for free after the event
Triggers: the piece touches on stabbings, sexual harassment, violence and war.
The People’s Carriage is part of Confluence – a long-form residency project. Since December 2023, MAYK has invited artists from across Bristol to explore the changing city and to think about how we navigate these places we call home. Over the next few months three more artists – Howl Yuan, Ramelle Williams and Iman Sultan-West – will also share the fruits of these creative investigations with audiences in sites and locations across the city.
Confluence is a production by MAYK, commissioned by Ginkgo Projects for Redcliffe Quarter with the support of Grainger plc
