Headfirst Editor's Pick

"More Black Midi than Hakuna Kulala, Avalanche Kaito have seemingly come from nowhere and out-flanked their electro/technoid counterparts. All roads lead to The Lanes for the highest of high-energy, futurist noise-rock, essential for fans of Senyawa, Pink Sifu, Lightning Bolt, Nyege Nyege…"

- AVALANCHE KAITO -
FFO: Senyawa | Black Midi | Can | Nyege Nyege Tapes | 70s era Zappa | Fugazi

Traditional West African music integrates with avant-garde Belgian noise rock!

Emerging from an original dimension in sound, the polygenesis Avalanche Kaito redefine what it is to talk with the ancients whilst leaping forth into a futuristic chaos of noise on their debut album journey. A palpable experience with each sonic blast, each layer a revelation, this simultaneously taut but expansive universe, in which the oral traditions of the West African griot converge with Belgium post-punk, exists in its own space.

Their sound encompasses a wide range of stylings — short bursts of rhythmic aggression, deep chants for the ancestors, improvisational freak-outs… a sound that transgresses and deconstructs, but also has the virtue of advancing traditional West African music — not by bringing it to the present time, but taking it centuries ahead in the future.

Kaito Winse (vocals, tama, peul flutes, and mouth bow)
Arnaud Paquotte (bass)
Benjamin Chaval (drums/electronics)

- IRAN IRAN -
FFO: Mastodon | Melvins | High On Fire

Iran Iran were formed in the DIY UK math scene of the 2010’s that would go on to birth Arctangent. Over the years and through several line up changes Iran Iran have moved from frenetic noise rock to ever lower tuned post metal. Their latest release “Previously, on Iran Iran” heralds the change, with enormous stoner riffs and noise freak outs bleeding into post-rock ambience, all built upon their signature obsession with compound time signatures and polyrhythmic disturbances.

- BEN BADDOO -

Xylophone master and percussionist Ben Baddoo from Ghana is a widely known figure in the world of drum and dance, having been among it’s leading exponents in the UK.

He is also an in-demand sessions-layer, having guested with artist as diverse as Vangelis, Nik Turner, Peter Gabriel and most recently Temple of Sounds. Ben is further noted for his Drum and Dance Workshops, which he has delivered not only at festivals around the world, but also in schools and colleges throughout the UK.
