The Grey Area presents:

The Scorpios

We welcome, for the first time to Bristol, The Scorpios. Who, with they’re unique musical meltdown of hypnotic Arab rhythms, psychedelic Sudanese Afrobeat and eastern funk, will be a treat for your ears and feet!

The core of the band consists of five Sudanese musicians who have played around the Horn of Africa as well as Arab states. The main vocalist, Regia Ishag, comes from a musical family that boasts such greats as the guitarist from the similarly named 70's Sudanese band The Scorpions. The other four members have been playing in traditional settings for many years, such as weddings and religious festivals.

They left Sudan in the 80's when the situation became volatile, and initially came to the UK as refugees. Their Sudanese influences range from traditional music all the way through to the pop songs of the 60's and 70's, which had reggae, funk, soul and even Latin leanings.

UK guitarist Adam Bulewski got to meet some musicians via the work he was doing in London with the local Sudanese community. They began recording sessions for a project aimed at reducing stigma around mental health. One of the percussionists became a very good friend and through him he managed to assemble the beginnings of the Scorpios. At present the Sudanese members are supported by an international backing band of musicians from Ghana, Jamaica, Poland, Japan and the UK.

On this night we'll be honoured to host a full 10 piece iteration of the group!

Tezeta

Tezeta are an 8 piece instrumental group combining elements of experimental jazz, afrobeat, soundtrack composition and collective improvisation. The musicians are part of Bristol based collective ‘Bloom’ and between them play with bands Yama Warashi, Count Bobo, The Evil Usses, Spindle Ensemble, Cloudshoes, Run Logan Run, Rae, Dubi Dolczek and many more.

They initially formed in 2014 to play music from ‘The Ethiopiques Volumes’, in particular the work of Mulatu Astatke, hence the name Tezeta (Ethiopian for nostalgia). Since then they have evolved under band leader Daniel Inzani into their current style with all original material, incorporating many other influences along the way.

Their debut album ‘Seventh Place‘ was released in Sept 2016 and launched at a celebrated ‘Bloom Presents’ night at The Wardrobe Theatre, Bristol
