Yuppie Nightmares: Something Wild & After Hours at The Former Bristol IMAX, Bristol Aquarium
Headfirst Editor's Pick

"The video rental specialists at 20th Century Flicks present another epic double screening in the grand tradition at the old IMAX. Two classic slices of yuppie misadventure; the criminally underrated Something Wild (featuring Ray Liota’s best role imho) and Scorsese’s dark and surreal comedy After Hours. You’re spoiled to see cult cinema on a screen like this, so thank your lucky Blurays and get on down."

Affordable cinema at a priceless venue

A event on Sunday 22nd October. The event starts at 16:30.

For our next foray at the former Bristol IMAX we are showing two Flicks favourites: Jonathan Demme’s Something Wild (1986) and Martin Scorsese’s After Hours (1985). With an introduction from Dr Mark Bould.

5pm: Criminally underseen, Something Wild is an 80s riff on the screwball genre, as a straitlaced businessman meets a free-spirited woman at a downtown New York greasy spoon before embarking on a road trip fraught with thrills, spills and maniac exes.

Featuring a killer soundtrack and electric performances from Jeff Daniels, Melanie Griffith, and Ray Liotta, it’s got kink, sass and charm to spare. Just joyful, wild 80s American cinema.

7.15pm: After Hours, often described as Scorsese does Kafka in New York, is a dazzling and disorientating tale of Paul Hackett’s misadventures on a night out downtown and his futile attempts to make it home. Beautifully shot by cinematographer Michael Ballhaus, it’s full of memorable characters, wonderful actors clearly relishing their roles and a snapshot of a city that’s so much more than the sum of its inhabitants neuroses.

Both have been recently remastered by Criterion and have never looked or sounded better!

Showing Sunday 22nd October, with tickets costing as little as £4 per movie, this is affordable cinema at a priceless venue. Come and support us as we try to keep this incredible venue for movie watching alive!
