A
gig
held at Bristol Folk House
on Thursday 28th November. The event starts at 20:00.
Ben Hicks and Betty Blight share an evening at the Folk House Café, playing their folk songs inspired by nature and traditional folk. They share a love for the singaround tradition, and on this occasion will share a song or two. Ben's depth of feeling comes through on acoustic guitar and voice, his songs somewhere between Cat Stevens and Bob Dylan, promising a harmonious set full of his countryside travels. Betty, also on acoustic guitar and voice, sings about disenfranchised women, the climate crisis and gets a bit of Bert Jansch in there too. The two are busy recording an album about Beltane, to be released next year, and they are sure to share some of the more seasonally adaptable songs for the audience's delight.
Ben Hicks is a multi-instrumentalist singer and songwriter with an eclectic mix of styles including jazz be-bop, house and cloud pop. Recently, he has discovered a passion for folk music, arranging traditional tunes and writing his own songs. He weaves intricate finger-picking on guitar with rich, soulful vocals. Many of his songs focus on the more than human world and through his music he intends to give nature and its beauty a voice.
Ben grew up near Paris, France before moving to the UK eight years ago. He spent many summers in Brittany, a region with strong Celtic roots and ongoing traditions. Employing the tremendous gift of being raised bilingual, he writes some of his songs in French. In the past year, he has performed with Betty Blight as part of The Scruffy Pooks folk trio at The Loko Club and Wander Gather allotments. In 2023, he released the electronic EP “Big Moon” under the name Narroways.
Betty Blight lives in Bristol, where she writes and performs folk songs on guitar and voice.
Her songs renew old ideas of English folklore, taking literary and historical figures as inspiration to deal with exile, youth, being an outcast, and women on the wrong side of power.
Born in the naval city of Portsmouth, Betty plays the echoes of the sea, the music of ships, as well as playing trad folk songs from players such as Shirley Collins, Archie Fisher and John Renbourn. She lived in Argentina for 14 years, but is now back recording new songs on reel to reel at The Living Room Studio Dan Weltman. She recorded a folk EP with Argentina-based American musician Diente de Madera in December 2023, which is due to be released in early 2025. With folk trio The Scruffy Pooks she has also recorded a mini album of songs for Beltane, which will be released in spring 2025. Her previous EPs, “Little One” (2021) and “Queen Misery” (2016) were recorded, mixed and mastered in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Hastings, UK by James Stonehewer.
