Following two charmingly hapless detectives - including Bong muse Song Kang-ho (Parasite and The Host) - as they investigate a series of small town murders in 80s South Korea, Bong Joon-Ho's international breakthrough showcases his trademark ability to swerve between wildly different tones - and of course, to grip viewers with a stomach-churningly compelling neo-noir plot.
Somehow, the genre-bending king of Korean cinema manages to successfully mash together a buddy cop comedy and a genuinely horrifying serial killer thriller (David Fincher could never). Throw in the brilliant performances and some razor-sharp observations about life under bureaucratic capitalism, and you've got a film that many consider Bong's best.
And if you can't get enough Bong, why not come to our colour v b&w Parasite screenings?
"Has lost none of its power to unsettle, and today it feels even stranger than ever."
--Bilge Ebiri, Village Voice
"What distinguishes "Memories of Murder," setting it apart from rank-and-file thrillers, is its singular mix of gallows humor and unnerving solemnity."
--Manohla Dargis, New York Times
