Set in a remote Italian mountain village during the final months of World War II, Vermiglio follows the story of Lucia, who falls for Pietro, a handsome deserter. The lives of the villagers are also portrayed, particularly Lucia's family, led by a stern patriarch. While the men gather at the local inn, the women toil to ensure their survival.
As winter sets in, the war feels distant, with only a few deserters hinting at the turmoil beyond. Lucia and Pietro's fates become intertwined at a village celebration, but with the war nearing its end, Pietro must return home to face the consequences of his desertion.
Mikhail Krichman's cinematography beautifully captures the village's atmosphere, while Delpero crafts a complex and heartbreaking portrait of rural life.
Vermiglio has been honored with the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival and is Italy’s entry for the Oscars.
