A new experiment from the UK’s leading spoken word and music improv show

“Poetry, but not as you know it…amazing!” Guardian

Following our barnstorming inaugural show in March, Tongue Fu Lab returns to The Cube, creating fresh experiments at the intersection of spoken word, music and live improvisation, with featured artists, an open mic and guest musicians…Part show, part flow, all enquiry. We’re inviting in more collaborators. No lab coats required.

Tongue Fu, led by Chris Redmond,  have been creating acclaimed collaborations (shows, books, films, albums) for close to two decades, playing the Roundhouse, Glastonbury, Edinburgh Festival and touring internationally everywhere from Ireland to Romania, South Africa to Brazil.

Tonight's programme feature's the following:

Malaika Kegode - award-winning poet, writer, performer, theatre-maker and creative producer. Her work is focused on uplifting and celebrating the voiceless, overlooked and misunderstood. She is especially passionate about challenging common narratives about working class and rural communities through stories told across mixed disciplines.

Malaika has been creating radio content since 2022, including the recent drama Tribe of Two (produced by Afonica for BBC Radio 4), which was shortlisted for the Imison Award by the Society of Authors. Malaika’s work has been featured on stages such as London’s Southbank Centre, Lyric Hammersmith, University of Austria and The Scottish Storytelling Centre.

Danny Carlo Pandolfi is a poet, rapper, writer, educator and cultural producer. His work explores the crossovers between forms associated with traditional poetry and contemporary hip-hop.

In over a decade of writing and performing, he has reached #1 in the iTunes UK Hip-Hop chart and Amazon Music Best Seller, been a 2x UK Battle Rap Champion, featured on TedX, ITV News and BBC 1Xtra, and performed at Ministry of Sound, 02 Academy Bristol and Roundhouse London.

His written work was shortlisted for the international 2025 Aesthetica Creative Writing Award, and longlisted for the 2024 New Writers Poetry Competition. He is founder and director of Raise the Bar, one of Europe's leading live poetry nights based in Bristol, and co-director and programme curator of Lyra - Bristol Poetry Festival.

Hosted by Chris Redmond - poet, musician and multi-artform hustler (BBC Radio 1-6 & Sky Arts).

The house band for tonight's programme is a trio of celebrated stalwarts from the Bristol & South West jazz scene.

Riaan Vosloo - Bass (Nostalgia 77, The Last Poets, Jamie Cullum)
Matt Brown - Drums (6161, Gregory Porter, Run Logan Run)
Clinton Hough - Guitar (Ma Polaine’s Great Decline)
