event
held at The Cube
on Monday 20th January. The event starts at 19:30.
On the day of Donald Trump's second inauguration as president of the United States, come to The Cube to watch and discuss two documentaries about our chaotic cousins across the pond by Bristol filmmaker Ed Hancox.
There'll be no formal Q&A, but stick around in the bar afterwards if you want to talk to the filmmaker, with Americana courtesy of DJ Louie Louisiana.
Nice Castle (15 mins) takes a journey to the frozen far north of the country, where a popular tourist attraction springs up every year: a gigantic castle made out of ice. Some might find the ice castle tacky, but the young and young-at-heart delight at the opportunity to slip and slide around in something that seems ripped from the pages of a fairytale (or at least, from a certain children's entertainment behemoth). But no American dream lasts forever...
My Info War (56 mins) takes on the Trump-era more directly, in the story of a young man trying his darndest to becoming an alt-right influencer in the aftermath of the 2016 election. But the path to online notoriety never did run smooth, and neither does the making of a documentary about such a toxic subject matter as race in America. Following its hard-to-pin-down subject from Texas to Charlottesville, and from dreams to reality (and maybe back again), My Info War is a message from the first Trump presidency, as America tries that whole making itself great again thing, again.
