We’ll always be together…
Miles (Twin Peaks’ Lenny Von Dohlen) is an archetypally 80s nerdy inventor in pre tech bro San Francisco, trying in vain to invent an earthquake-proof brick. He also has a deep crush on across-the-hall neighbour and 'sexy cellist' Madeline (Virginia Masden). After buying a state-of-the-art computer and immediately spilling champagne on it, he finds more than he bargains for when it inexplicably begins to express thoughts and emotions of its own. Before long both Miles and Edgar (the computer - voiced by Bud Cort) are competing for Madeline’s attentions, via an interconnecting maelstrom of foolish/screwy romantic interventions, accelerating into the kind of whirlwind romance/love triangle ChatGPT could never hope to spew forth, even on its wildest sparkling wine benders.
The future ain't quite what it used to be... So come glimpse it as envisaged by 1984 record industry execs - riddled with glee over the exciting new possibilities of music video/feature film synthesis. Sold to territories all over the world within weeks of conception, but somewhat forgotten to time since, this pop video-tastic classic may be better remembered for its theme song than its searing technological prescience, but it’s quite the doozy for eighties heads. A charmingly goofy winner that feels like receiving a postcard from simpler times.
AND AFTER THE FILM...stick around for a synthetic boogie at our Sexy Computer Disko, as Cube DJs celebrate computer love in honour of yer man (Giorgio) Moroder’s birthday. Synth Pop, Minimal, Disco, Kosmische and more.
