The Shed ft. Steven Kirby at The Bristol Fringe
See event details

A event held at The Bristol Fringe on Tuesday 6th August. The event starts at 17:00.

We are really excited to present a guest co-leader for The Shed in August, as part of a special one-off gig with US guitarist, composer and educator Steven Kirby. Steven is an associate professor on the Harmony and Jazz Composition department at Berklee College of Music and will have a lot to offer students of The Shed. We will host a session with Steven at 5-6pm on 6th August at The Bristol Fringe- talking about developing your musical voice, through your composition.

Featured on over 25 released recordings, Steven has recorded with many leading figures in contemporary jazz; Chris Potter, Joe Lovano, Scott Colley, Bruce Barth, Allan Holdsworth, Mike Manieri and others. He is an evolved writer and player and has the ability to write very lyrically, indeed often featuring wordless vocals in his music to great effect, and explores longer, and through composed forms in his composition masterfully.

As such, Alex will talk to Steven about his approach to playing, composition and performance experience/career and Steven will talk about his music and some of these features of his music as a way in to learning how to write with honesty, heart and develop your personal voice as a composer/ musician.

This will be more of a masterclass, and as such won't require instruments; but bring questions, an open mind and perhaps some manuscript paper and let's see where it takes us :)

This session will be valuable for students just getting interested, and developing their practice as jazz composers, as well as more experienced writers. What Steven teaches will be applicable to the work of younger musicians 13+, as well as those more established. We hope you can make it, as it is going to be a really memorable session working with this fabulous musician and educator.
