A
gig
held at The Bristol Fringe
on Tuesday 5th July. The event starts at 20:00.
The spring/summer season of FITR climaxes with an astonishing bill of contemporary music, bringing together some of the finest creative musicians in Bristol, the UK and Europe
Palindromes
Paul Dunmall - Saxophones
Olie Brice - Double Bass
Mark Sanders - Drums
Three generations of British improvisation melded together into one super group of improvisation. Each musician a master of their instrument's history and pointing towards its future, Palindromes eviscerate the boundaries of jazz, improvisation and contemporary art music. Bands like this are the reason you put on DIY gigs in great small venues and we're extremely lucky and excited to have them play at our final FITR gig of the season.
Mark Whitlam - Solo Percussion & Electronics
One of the go-to improvising drummers on the scene, Mark is part of Iain Ballamy’s quartet, Steve Banks’s Quintet and has been fortunate to have performed with many UK jazz legends, from Pee Wee Ellis to Clare Teal. Building on his passion for fusing electronics and improvisation in local band Michelson Morley led by Jake McMurchie, Mark completed a masters degree in 2021 from the University of Bristol specialising in electroacoustic composition. This has, possibly misguidedly, led him to apply for a PhD, hopefully starting later this year, to continue his journey into a glitchy musical abyss! Mark is delighted to be opening the evening with a solo set of improvised electroacoustic music using surround speaker diffusion and featuring long-time friend and collaborator Nick Malcolm on a couple of freely improvised pieces.
