A
gig
held at The Bristol Fringe
on Tuesday 3rd December. The event starts at 20:00.
This project by promising young bass player and band leader, currently based in Cardiff, Cameron Saint- unites 'Cam' with stellar graduates from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Toby Kearns (trumpet) and Tom Williams (drums) for a one-off gig with celebrated tutors of the college- Welsh piano legend Huw Warren and Bristol based saxophonist Alex Merritt.
This outfit will lead a re-imagining of Mingus's music, and build on Cameron Saint's 'Mingus Project' that was recently recorded and documented with a fantastic line-up of RWCMD graduates. About the project, Cameron says:
'The Mingus Project is a group of young musicians with a shared love for the compositions of the great Charles Mingus. Led from the back by bassist Cameron Saint, this group strives to embrace the emotion and chaos of Mingus’ writing, whilst also adding a modern sound throughout!
This project was founded in a practice room at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in early 2022 and a year and a half later, they recorded their debut album ‘Live @ The Flute and Tankard’, which they released and toured in Feb 2024.
This gig will be in their quintet form, with Trumpet and Tenor Saxophone featuring throughout! The band tonight is comprised of Cameron Saint (Bass), Alex Merritt (Tenor Sax), Toby Kearns (Trumpet), Huw Warren (piano) and Tom Williams (Drums).'
