David Mowat is"a versatile player with big open sound paired to a sensitive approach that excells on ballads" (Phil Johnson) On the Bristol scene since the late 1980s he began his playing in London with Gail Thompson (of Jazz Warriors) before touring with his earlier bands including Timshell Quintet featuring Brian Abrahams on drums. He's played several venues in Europe with the Bollywod Brass Band but has focused in recent years on supporting other musicians, being an instigator of East Bristol Jazz Club and now running music at Saint Stephens Bristol.
Mowat's newly formed Quintet features the exciting French Saxophonist Julien Alenda who started to play jazz alto sax as a teenager at his local clubs in Normandy. After graduating from the Conservatoire in Toulouse in 2008, he spent one year in San Diego, US where he had the great opportunity to study with alto sax master Charles McPherson. In 2009 he played and recorded original songs in Brazil with local musicians. He then played in a cruise ship jazz group before moving to Bristol in 2012. His playing is influenced by Cannonball Adderley, Kenny Garrett and Dexter Gordon among others. The band is completed by the superb Anders Olinder on keyboards, the wizard Italian double bass player Pasquale Votino and the John McLaughlin-inspired and powerful Marco Anderson on drums.
Playing largely Dave Mowat's own lyrical compositions this is the Quintet's debut performance and with a lineup this strong it's bound to be electric.
