Expect stunning visuals, inspiring narratives, and a deep appreciation for the sea, all showcased on Bristol’s largest cinema screen. This is more than just a screening—it’s a celebration of the Bristol surf community and the power of film to connect us to the waves.
For this event, we’re screening: "Surf On, Europe!" for its UK premiere as well as three shorts from UK surf-filmmakers.
“Surf on, Europe!” is a political surf documentary set along the Western European coast, exploring social and political challenges through the lens of surf culture.
The film follows three surf enthusiasts, each confronting unique struggles within European norms and ideals. In Tarifa, Spain, Majid, a kitesurfing instructor, longs to reunite with his family, who remain in Morocco due to visa restrictions. In Biarritz, France, Margaux challenges gender stereotypes in the traditionally heteronormative surf scene by organizing Europe’s first LGBTQ-friendly surf festival. In Derry, Northern Ireland, Rosy, who found refuge in surfing during the Troubles, now navigates the challenges of building a business in the wake of Brexit.
For each of them, surfing is more than a sport, it’s a shared language in an ever-changing Europe. Surf on, Europe! examines the promise of freedom and the enduring challenges that shape the continent’s future.
