"Arguably the most gifted Hungarian filmmaker of his generation, István Szőts has been compared by critics to Ford, Dovzhenko and Renoir" Second Run

István Szöts' second feature, after the acclaimed People of the Mountains, was banned in Hungary because of its depiction of the controversial issue of Hungarian prisoners held by the Soviets. The Hungarian Communist leader Matyas Rakosi walked out of a screening in protest, and resulted in Szöts' next scheduled feature to be taken away from him and given to another director. Song of the Cornfields was not shown again in Hungary until 1979.

Based on the Ferenc Mora novel, the film follows a Hungarian soldier who returns from fighting in the Second World War and marries the widow of a former comrade who he thinks died in the Prisoner of War camp in which they were held.
