WOMEN IN EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC at Strange Brew
Headfirst Editor's Pick

"Uncompromising multi-headed sonics! With Mariam Rezaei’s industrialised turntablist destruction, Susu Laroche’s rhythmical ritual debke-darkwave and Valentina Magaletti and Fanny Chiarello’s percussive sound poem manifestos. This is one hell of a statement FFO: Tomaga, Moin, DJ Haram, Aisha Devi, Philip Jeck."

MUSIC TO COME AND STRANGE BREW PROUDLY PRESENT

WOMEN IN EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC WITH MARIAM REZAEI, PERMANENT DRAFT AND SUSU LAROCHE

THURSDAY 18th JULY
From 19.00 to 22.30

MARIAM REZAEI is a multi-award winning composer, turntablist and performer. She previously led experimental arts project TOPH, TUSK FRINGE and TUSK NORTH, and in November 2022, she received the Paul Hamlyn Foundation #AwardsForArtists, in recognition of her contribution to music composition. Her music has recently been described as ‘genuinely ground-breaking’ (London Jazz News 2022) and ‘high-velocity sonic surrealism’ (4* The Guardian 2022). Recent release BOWN (Heat Crimes) charted no.6 in The Wire and no10 in The Quietus’ best albums of 2023, and was album of the week in The Quietus. Boomkat described it as ‘harnessing extreme technical prowess - phenomenal stuff’.

Recent performances include Turntable Trio with Evicshen and Maria Chávez at Counterflows Festival 2023 (Glasgow)/ REWIRE 2023(Den Haag), soloist with Frankfurt Radio Orchestra for the closing concert at IM Darmstadt 2023, soloist with London Sinfonietta at HCMF 2023 and Taipei Biennial 2023 in a quartet with DJ Sniff, Rex Chen and DJ SlowPitchSound. For her three day residency Café Oto in November 2023, Mariam premiered three new projects: a string trio with Angharad Davies (violin), Atzi Muramatsu (cello) and Semay Wu (cello); a quartet with Mette Rasmussen (alto sax), Gabriele Mitelli (trumpet, electronics) and Lukas Koenig (drums); and a duo with fellow turntablist Edward George.

PERMANENT DRAFT is an all female, trans and non-binary label and micropress dedicated to experimental music lead by Valentina Magaletti and Fanny Chiarello.
Leaving the grandiose apart, Valentina and Fanny pay and bring attention to the sounds, details and anecdotes of everyday life, picking up raw material from the ordinary.
Permanent Draft aims to highlight works showing a certain taste for fragmentary, irrepressible creative eruption and lo-fi experiments. So far, the label has released a cassette of EP64-63 by Ondata Rossa, a reissue of Valentina Magaletti's Queer Anthology of Drums, her EP Lucha Libre, and Basta Now, Women, Trans and Non-Binary in Experimental Music, an anti-academic essay by Fanny Chiarello. There will be copies of the book on sale at the event.
