Join us for the first of our spring series of concerts as renowned Saxophonists Alex Clarke and Ruth Hammond team up to explore some of their favourite ‘two tenors’ Jazz albums.
Expect new explorations of the Ronnie Scott/Tubby Hays repertoire alongside material from the famous collaborations of Zoot Sims + Al Cohn, Jonny Griffin + Lockjaw Davis and of course Sonny Rollins + Sonny Stitt.
Alex is one of the most in-demand and versatile saxophonists on the British jazz scene, praised for her intelligent ear for harmony and a deep knowledge of repertoire, Alex's sound is steeped in the tradition of bebop. Her total respect for the heritage of the music can be heard in a fiery, melodic approach inspired by the likes of Phil Woods, Cannonball Adderley and Vincent Herring. Alex was winner of the Rising Star category of the 2019 British Jazz Awards, was finalist in the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the year 2020 and nominated for the 2021 and 2022 Parliamentary Jazz Awards.
Ruth Hammond (Hopkins Hammond Trio, Jingu Bang, Starlings, Brass Junkies) is Bristol’s top improvising multi-instrumentalist, equally at home performing at Ronnie Scotts, The National Theatre or a Serbian Castle on all number of woodwinds and keyboards. Ruth is a deeply melodic, sincere and incredibly groovy musician, The London Evening Standard described “Her playing [as] sumptuously beautiful”.
Adam Stokes is an up-and-coming Guitarist blending Jim Hall Style melodic development with Thelonious Monk’s angular dissonances, he is known on the Bristol scene as the host of the Stag and Hounds Jam session where he has played with the who’s who of Bristol Jazz.
Riaan Vosloo (Nostalgia 77, Twelves, Ex-Run Logan Run, Ed Jones Quartet) is a highly acclaimed Bassist, Producer, Composer, Arranger and Educator. Riaan has recorded and arranged for Gregory Porter and Jamie Cullum and runs Impossible Ark records, an indie label showcasing creative musicians from the world of Jazz, World folk and Experimental music.
Matt Stockham Brown (6161, Ex-Run Logan Run, Sefrial, Modulusiii, Orfic) is a busy touring drummer who has performed with the likes of Gregory Porter, Pee Wee Ellis and Andy Sheppard, his band Run Logan Run won the 2018 Montreux Jazz Festival Talent Awards and he was featured in Rhythm Magazine’s ’10 British Newcomers’ article.
