Lydia Kavina, who as a child in Moscow played for Lev Theremin the inventor of the mysterious instrument which bears his name, and a cousin of Lydia's grandfather is the world's foremost thereminist. A regular collaborator with Danny Elfman, Howard Shore and the film director Tim Burton, with whom she worked on Ed Wood and Mars Attacks, and with Tom Waits and Robert Wilson for'Alice' and'The Black Rider', Lydia most recently gave a gala theremin performance for the opening of'The World of Tim Burton' at the Max Ernst Museum in in Cologne. In the first part of tonight's show commissioned for Filmic by St George's Lydia will lead a short introductory lecture/demonstration on the instrument while in the second, accompanied by the Lochrian Ensemble with Christopher Northam, piano, and Imogen Triner, oboe, she will perform a special Filmic programme including Miklos Rozsa's'Fantasy' from Hitchcock's Spellbound, Martinu's'Fantasia for Theremin, Oboe, Piano and String Quartet', and music by Howard Shore for Ed Wood and by Danny Elfman for Mars Attacks.
