This rare duo performance by consummate sitar player Jasdeep Singh Degun is a chance to hear his music in an altogether different context to his triumphant, award-winning sitar concerto Arya and his many other critically-lauded collaborations.
Degun – who recently became the first classical Indian musician to win a Royal Philharmonic Society award – is both a custodian of tradition and a restless innovator. At the heart of his boundary-pushing musical brilliance is his lifelong training in gayaki ang – a lyrical approach to the sitar that mimics the human voice. He says: “In our tradition, you’re always a student. My teacher, Ustad Dharambir Singh, shows me how big the music is, and how much we still have to explore.” Tonight he will be accompanied by one of Europe’s leading tabla players, Gurdain Rayatt.
