Poetry. Form and Protest | Feat. Safiya Kamaria Kinshasa + Anthony Anaxagorou
Anthony Anaxagorou’s Heritage Aesthetics and Safiya Kamaria Kinshasa’s Cane, Corn & Gully are two of the UK’s most critically acclaimed poetry collections of the past year. Both writers use poetic form in unique and unexpected ways to challenge historical narratives around colonialism and racism. Kinshasa uses labanotation and rhythm to analyse movement from Caribbean dance and explore black West Indian femininity. Anaxagorou unpacks the travelogues of colonial writers and military men alongside experiences of racism in the present, drawing on his family’s own migratory histories.
Join these two innovative writers for an exclusive live reading of their work, followed by a conversation around how the manipulation of language and form can subvert expectations and reclaim, or create new, narratives.
