James Opstad is a bassist and composer based in Stroud, UK. Once a regular fixture on the London jazz scene, his wide ranging musical interests and unique versatility have since seen him perform in a broad range of styles and settings. As a member of the experimental music ensemble, Apartment House, he has featured on numerous recordings for the Another Timbre label and performed at venues including Wigmore Hall and Café Oto. Other collaborations have included the free-improv trio, duck-rabbit, the Balkan folk band, Paprika, and the Nuevo Tango ensemble, Fugata Quintet, as well as performances with the classical guitarist, Miloš.
Matt Davis has been active in improvised music since the mid 90’s, playing throughout the UK and Europe in many different collaborations in small and large group ensembles including Zeitkratzer and La Sospechosa dance company, appearing on Another Timbre, Confront and Erstwhile record labels.
He is currently based in Bristol where he regularly collaborates with, amongst others, Phil Minton, Luigi Marino and Matthew Grigg. Regular groups include Nodosus (with Angharad Davies, Dimitra Lazaridou-Chatzigoga, Dominic Lash and John Butcher) and a trio with Rachel Musson and Mark Sanders.
Charlotte Keeffe wears her love for freely improvising, free jazz and abstract music-making on her (brightly coloured) sleeve. Whether performing regularly as a soloist, or leading a variety of different ensembles, she meticulously carves out spaces for the free movement of ideas and individual expression.
Inspired by abstract painters, Keeffe refers to her instruments as ‘Sound Brushes’.
‘…Keeffe shows notable strength of character as she runs the sonic and emotional gamut…”
– Kevin Le Gendre, JAZZWISE
Matthew Grigg is Bristol based musician and concert organiser active in free improvisation and noise musics.
“somehow treads an impossible line between fragile beauty and gnarled anger” – Phil England, The Wire
“A musician who focuses primarily on intuitively creating sound on the electric guitar. Influences such as avant-garde, musique-concrête and noise are never far away in his idiosyncratic sound palette…” – New Wave of Jazz
