"Free entry! An early offering from queer cinema trailblazer Todd Haynes at Sidney & Eden: both psychodrama and social satire, Safe stars Julianne Moore as an 80s housewife trapped in a slow nightmare of insidious illness and suburban isolation. Provocative, uncanny and endlessly relevant."

event
held at Sidney & Eden
on Tuesday 7th January. The event starts at 19:00.
For our first event of 2025, we’ll be screening Todd Haynes’ SAFE (1995), 7pm at the Sidney and Eden pub on Tuesday January 7th.
One of the icons of 90s independent filmmaking and queer cinema, this was Haynes’ provocative, unsettling second feature, before going to make acclaimed, higher-budgeted films like Far From Heaven, Carol and May December.
Julianne Moore stars as a suburban housewife whose bland, sterile lifestyle is interrupted when he is struck by a mysterious illness. Is she allergic to something in the environment? Or is she subconsciously reacting against the confinement of her domestic alienation?
It’s free entry, with doors opening at 18.30 for a 19.00 start, in the downstairs room of the Sidney and Eden (BS7 8NU). All welcome to stay for a post-film drink afterwards, and mull over the film’s many ambiguities!
