A
event
held at Sidney & Eden
on Tuesday 28th January. The event starts at 19:00.
For our next event at the Indie Classics Film Club on Tuesday January 28th, we’ll be screening WANDA (1970), 7pm at the Sidney and Eden.
Barbara Loden both directs and stars as the titular character, a drifter who embarks on a listless journey through the criminal underworld after divorcing her husband and losing custody of her children.
Shot on a shoe-string budget with a tiny crew, Wanda failed to make much of an impact upon initial release, and Loden never directed another film. But its reputation has grown massively over the years, with Jon Waters and Isabelle Hupert among its many champions, and in 2022 it was listed in the top 50 as one of Sight and Sound’s greatest ever films.
To find out why, be sure to head to the downstairs screening room of the Sidney and Eden (BS7 8NU)) on Tuesday 28th January, any time from 18.30 for a 19.00 start. It’s free entry, and all are welcome to stay for a drink afterwards.
“How can a woman ever afford to be both wayward and astray? Wanda showed us how it’s done without telling us why (or why not). Loden’s crisp sensitivity and sudden spikes of ambivalence are immortalised in her debut, and only, feature film as a director.” (Savina Petkova)
“Flies in the face of the generic American road movie’s petro-capitalist and patriarchal fantasies.” (Becca Voelcker)
“Quite simply, there is nothing else like this film.” (Anna Backman Rogers)
