To celebrate Easter, the Indie Classics Film Club will be screening Abel Ferrara’s BAD LIEUTENANT (1992) on Tuesday 22nd April at the Sidney and Eden.
On one hand a pulpy crime thriller about a rogue cop running wild in the streets of New York City, Bad Lieutenant is at the same time a Catholic morality tale about damnation and redemption worthy of the season.
Harvey Keitel stars as an NYPD lieutenant who abuses his power gambling, doing drugs, violently attacking criminals and harassing citizens, only to eventually be confronted with his spiritual squalor.
Be warned: this is called ‘Bad Lieutenant,’ and not ‘Good Lieutenant’, for a reason, and some of his antics are hard to stomach and not for the faint-hearted. But it’s also an intensely powerful fable, infused by director Ferrara’s unique blend of low-brow pulpy provocations and religious transcendence and sense of morality.
Entry is free, and the film will start at 19.30, with doors opening at 19.00, and we’ll be staying for a drink at the upstairs bar afterwards.
