See event details

A event held at No. 51s on Sunday 27th October. The event starts at 11:00.

This event is part of Stokes Croft Calling. This performance will last for approximately 15- 20 minutes. Please click on the button above to purchase tickets to your preferred time slot.

Settle in, gather round and let your imaginations loose as the wonderful Doctah Edson Burton takes you on a journey through the Stokes Croft of times gone by, depositing you in the present day, with twists, intrigue, and laughs along the way.

You may find yourself in the 13th Century when the fair that reached the bottom of Stokes Croft was the most famous in this land, and pirates roamed the streets; or the civil war when a huge gate spanned Stokes Croft at it’s top, at the boundary of the city wall, where the traffic lights are now. Two skeletons were found, soldiers defending the city in the trenches at the city border along Ashley Road. You may learn of the local giant, or hear of bear-fights in the bear pit, and draw a winding thread of story between these characters: resistance-fighters, travellers, artists, outsiders to our modern day heroes of the Croft: Banksy, Inky, Massive Attack, DJ Derek, and understand how the counterculture spirit of the neighbourhood we love is no accident, but part of a rich and preciously unique history.

So get comfy, and give your imaginations over to Edson Burton, the illustrious Bristol Bard, for his short yet impactful tale of the fascinating story of Stokes Croft.

This is a family friendly performance and children are welcome. Please book a ticket for each person in attendance - this includes children and babies in pushchairs.

The event will be in the courtyard of 51s. Seating and standing will be undercover and the event will go ahead in rain, but please wrap up warm!

This performance is wheelchair accessible but unfortunately the toilets are not. Please see an event steward who will direct you to the nearest accessible facility. There is a mixture of standing and seated. We aim to ensure that this event is accessible to all, but in order to do this we ask individuals to please contact us in advance to discuss specific access needs, so we can work with you to try and meet these ([email protected]).
