Doors 7:30pm, Show 8:00pm
Raka are an 8-piece ensemble that play traditional music from the Balkans. The unmistakable groove of Raka brings everyone to their feet. Our music has a strong focus in the folk traditions of Bulgaria and Macedonia, as well as the Romani music that span far and wide across the Balkans. Our meandering musical tributaries have all led us to one communal river: the love and commitment to understanding and interacting with the music of the Balkans. We bring to life a genuinely authentic repertoire wherever we are, from sweaty back rooms of North London clubs to concert halls on the banks of the Thames. We took the dance for our name as that’s what we love to do. A heart rending lament can move the body as much as a pounding Bulgarian Pravo, and in Raka we have made space for both, and everything in between.
Soufian Saihi & Ricardo de Noronha
Soufian’s deep knowledge of Arabic and oriental music traditions, along with many years of exploration in rhythms and alternate music, including forming the band Karama, has earned him much recognition as a virtuoso oud player. Soufian brought his skills to the UK in 2004 where he has progressed from street busking to the concert hall thanks to his remarkable musicianship.
His compositions fuse tradition with modernity, uplifted with Ricardo de Noronha’s thunderous hand percussion.
Ricardo recorded several world music albums with award-winning bands since the 90’s. He founded Meridianum Ensemble in 2018, a transcultural musical collaboration, bringing together elements from Portugal, the UK and Morocco.
Expect fine acoustic evocations of Sufi music, blues-inflected North African tunes and the odd Electronica fusion for good measure!
