A
gig
held at The Jam Jar
on Saturday 12th July. The event starts at 20:30.
Maloya music, along with séga, is one of the two major genres in Réunion - the beautiful volcanic island situated in the Indian Ocean to the east of Madagascar. The music is highly powerful, raw and percussive, with call and response vocals sung in Réunion Creole. It has origins in both Africa and India.
For twenty five years, the group LINDIGO, led by Olivier Araste, has been the most popular maloya group in Reunion Island. However, their approach is neither confined by nostalgia nor by the shackles of sterile memory. The foundations serve the momentum, and the roots build the future: this is "Maloya Power"
In concert, the ten members of the group mix a repertoire of acoustic maloya with Afrobeat, Electronic, Mandingo and Afro-Cuban music. Alongside traditional percussion, instruments such as Balafon, Accordion and Synthesiser combine for a unique and enchanting fusion.
2025 sees the Lindigo family return with a new team that emphasizes youth and the contributions of women.
