ANIMATED DOUBLE FEATURE: Fantastic Planet (1973) + It's Such A Beautiful Day (2012)

"If only he could travel back and impart some wisdom to his younger self; if only he could at least tell the young people in this room. He lifts an arm to speak but inexplicably says, 'It smells like dust and moonlight.'"

For almost 20 years, Don Hertzfeldt has been one of the world's most inventive, prodigiously talented and bracingly sardonic directors of hand-drawn animated film.

It's Such a Beautiful Day follows an anxiety-stricken stick man named Bill for whom the mundane tasks of everyday life prove earth-shatteringly momentous. The film is a pocket-sized epic, incorporating the blistering deadpan of Buster Keaton, the narrative back-flipping of Charlie Kaufman, the blissful Zen contemplation of Yazujiro Ozu and the grand philosophical investigations of Terrence Malick. It's Such a Beautiful Day is filmmaking at its most original: like nothing you will have seen before.

Hertzfeldt’s writing and delivery – not quite deadpan but permanently, ambivalently perplexed – are things of wonder, hitting bittersweet notes of human irresolution, idiosyncratic passions, existential ambivalence and futility.
