ELLIS.D + Bramwell + JC & The Great Plague at Exchange
Headfirst Editor's Pick

"Bewitching basement takeover from Brighton multi-instrumentalist ELLiS.D: taut, twitchy indie-psych spliced with anxious krautrock rhythms, a touch of disco sleaze and irresistible David Byrne-style weirdo-croon. Big FFO: Jehnny Beth, Ty Segall, O Sees, Cate Le Bon."

ELLiS.D
The phenomenal ELLiS.D makes a return to Bristol on their tour.Manic drummer-turned-solo artist ELLiS·D spent their formative years flailing their limbs across the tattered kits of UK and Europe’s basement scene before starting out their solo project in 2022. After signing with DIY label Crafting Room Recordings, the ensuing 18 months has seen them in a state of near consistent touring throughout the sweaty dives of the continent, bringing their raw, mercurial live performance to stages from London to Luxembourg, Bristol to Brussels, Kendal to Kusel.

Backed by a continuously shifting set of session musicians on tour, in the studio ELLiS·D channels the workhorse-like energy of fellow multi-instrumentalists Ty Segall, Prince and Kevin Parker to mould a sound that at once feels familiar but also completely their own. Embodying the extravagance and glam-pop sensibilities of the likes of Marc Bolan and New York Dolls, with the lyrical sensitivity and intensity of The Smiths and Jehnny Beth, ELLiS·D creates something uniquely contradictory. Jangly, threadbare guitar riffs weave their way through CAN inspired rhythmic pulses as hook-smeared repetitions and explosive, abstract vocal acrobatics flow and fight their way into psych-driven instrumentals.

After two self-produced EP’s recorded on a shoestring in his mysterious Brighton studio space (known only to its inhabitants as ‘The Carwash’) sold out separate limited cassette runs, February 2023 single ‘Straitjacket Blues’ (produced by Shuta Shinoda) signified a marked shift as ELLiS·D began exploring new territory with tinges of new wave and disco infused krautrock weaving its way into their music, gaining consistent radio play from Tom Robinson at BBC Radio 6 alongside support slots for Razorlight at Brighton Dome and Hammersmith Apollo in April 2023.

2023 became a prolific year as three further single releases preceded 7-track EP ‘Hullo, Reality!’ in October, released both digitally and on 12” through Crafting Room, before ELLiS·D joined forces with The DSM IV (feat. Guy McKnight of 80’s Matchbox B-Line Disaster) for a three week co-headline tour across the UK and Europe, culminating in a sold out hometown headline show at The Hope & Ruin in Brighton.

"If you're into twisted, psychosomatic art-rock, ELLiS·D is right up your alley. It's like they've hacked into the matrix of music-making and come up with something entirely new. But the real magic happens during his live shows where every performance is a wild ride, like a game of musical roulette." - Still Listening
FFO: Talking Heads, Associates, Franz Ferdinand, Television

BRAMWELL
Since their inception in 2021, Bramwell have been confusing crowds both north and south of Exeter with their blend of two different musical worlds.
One side of the group focuses on primitive rhythms, deranged, humorous and often cryptic lyrics, with guitar riffs that sound like a ghostly buzzsaw.

The other delves into hook-laden, infectious power pop, lyrically covering the blurred lines between what’s weird and normal in the ‘everyday’, influenced by Big Star and the classic indie rock of Guided by Voices in equal measures.
Bramwell puts the crowd and listener through a tough, emotional but hypnotic journey. This feeling of confusion soon subsides, followed by understandable pangs of anger, but finally you accept, and understand what Bramwell does. Ultimately, the maelstrom of weird post-punk and jangly pop tests your endurance and turns this state of confusion into a feeling of cathartic ecstasy.
“A glorious assault upon your aural senses.” - JanglePopHub
“Bands this good don’t come along very often. Miss Bramwell at your peril” – Joyzine.
