The event is hosted by Saili Katebe, and is part of the wider Conversations with Baldwin festival celebrating the centenary of iconic writer James Baldwin (1924 - 1987).

Conversations with Baldwin: Open Mic is welcome to poets, rappers, storytellers, lyricists, songwriters, and wordsmiths from Global Majority backgrounds, of all styles and levels of experience.

Conversations with Baldwin is an arts festival produced by Words of Colour celebrating the 100th birthday of iconic 20th century writer and activist James Baldwin (1924 - 1987) across the UK. Conversations with Baldwin is supported by Bristol City Council’s Originator’s Fund and public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

⭐ EDSON BURTON ⭐

Dr Edson Burton is a poet, drama writer, curator and historian. In performance and on the page Edson combines storytelling, with a deep love for the power of words. His work includes commissions for Situations, & the Welsh National Opera. Edson has delivered workshops in schools, prisons, churches, and community settings. He is the author of poetry collection Seasoned (2007). Edson was Lyra’s 2022 Festival Poet.

SEATING / TIMINGS

Doors open at 7:00pm.

The show begins at 7:30pm, so please arrive and be seated promptly. The event includes a 15 minute interval and will be finished by 9:30pm.

Poetry events include performers sharing personal accounts which you may relate to in some way. This may include content that is potentially upsetting or triggering. We provide a general content warning at the beginning of each event, and poets may choose to provide one for their own poem if necessary. Attendees are welcome to leave the venue at any time and return when they feel comfortable, but please try to do this before/after a poem.

Raise the Bar has a zero tolerance policy towards hate, discrimination and abuse of any kind. Our staff team will work together to ensure the space is respectful and welcoming at all times. The open mic rules include 'no punching down' and 'no nudity', and a content warning will be provided at the start of the event.

Entry requirements: 14+, any under 18s accompanied by 21+ adult 1:1 ratio
