A
event
on Saturday 16th November. The event starts at 19:30.
Tonight's event features a screening of Clive Smith's (AS IT IS tv) film called 'Bristol's Afrikan-Caribbean Legends of Martial Arts' - a documentary that reveals how, through racism and discrimination, some local pioneers created a legacy that embodies turning adversity into achievement. It focuses on creating spaces for youths to focus and empower themselves and their communities. The film also documents the notable efforts and achievements made by those involved and still involved in martial arts, it's a thrilling story of martial arts, mentors & movement.
This event circles around 'community' with a focus on what we do (and what we could do) to lift the people and places up in which we live. We do this by creating opportunities, agreements and culture, often we do this in testing circumstances, sometimes we do good. Clive is one of these people and he has spent decades documenting what he and others do, often in St Paul's, Bristol where he lives. He is joined by Winston Williams and community workers Judit Davies, Trace Mulzac, Chiz Williams, guest speakers and yourselves to discuss these themes.
In Clive's film you will hear from martial arts champions Lloyd Russell, Lloyd Allen, Nathan Lewis, Sean Viera, and Winston Williams as they share their motivations and challenges, and pay tribute to pioneers like Henry Cornwall, Max Maximen, Trevor Johnson and Stanmore Allen.
After the screening there will be some activity and a live discussion focusing on the film and sharing our stories of making community. Join in, Judit Davies will be the host. Judit is a Bristol based community worker who is passionate about working with the youth and the elders. Since Covid 19 she can proudly claim to be a gangsta gardener, she love reclaiming urban spaces and helping them to flourish.
Community leaders/workers and those that support their people and places do so in millions of different vibrant ways, often with little support or resources. Kin's Widening Circles create spaces for people to think, support and action what emerges. Tonight we are together to honor our elders and mentors by utilising our memories and histories and to see what happens.
