GAY24 Film Club - Super 8½, Butch Patrol, Cat Nip at Cloak
Headfirst Editor's Pick

"An absolute gift of a free entry evening with a selection of overlooked 80s/90s queer cinema curated by cross-continental film club GAY24. Top billing is underground classic Super 81/2 - queercore transgressive Bruce LaBruce’s filthily kitsch self-satire of a down-on-his-luck porn director gone avant-garde."

A event held at Cloak on Thursday 21st March. The event starts at 19:30.

Try as they might, nobody has ever been as good at taking the piss out of us as we have; so much so that we've turned it into a literal artform.

We've always been like this (bratty). Our third program of GAY24 Season Five celebrates the brat in all her forms, our feature film highlighting one who may lay claim to being queen brat himself; Bruce LaBruce.

All three of our films in this program relish the opportunity to poke fun at ourselves and each other. In her criminally underseen pseudo-documentary CAT NIP (seriously; as of writing this just 3 people in total have logged the film on Letterboxd and I'm one of them), Amanda Taylor applies dyke logic to an old family myth much the the horror of the rest of her family. Her grandmother famously hated cats, lesbians obviously love cats; perhaps the lady doth protest too much? Taylor is on the case.

Backing that up will be Myra Paci's debut micro-short BUTCH PATROL, in which a gang of butches stalk the streets looking for fems to terrorise. Oh no, I hope they don't catch me I'd hate that noooo...

Finally, our feature film brings the long-awaited arrival of the daddy of queercore Bruce LaBruce into the GAY24 canon. In SUPER 8½ LaBruce plays a hyperbolic version of himself; a washed up Warhol wannabe who was hot on the alt-porn scene until he sold out to the arthouse crowd and lost all his street cred. Now an up-and-coming lesbian documentary maker wants to profile him - could this be his ticket back to relevance, or is he just being used?

A classic in every sense, SUPER 8½ might be LaBruce's best work - a hilarious, horny pisstake of himself, other queers, and the scene he helped create. Essential viewing.
