A event held at Cloak on Sunday 18th August. The event starts at 20:00.

In December 2022, we started this film night kind of by accident. Inspired by our love of queers and our sharehouse’s lack of a living room, we began showing our favourite queer films in a local bar for our friends.

Things escalated, as our schemes often seem to do, and so we’re screening our first ever program again, for those of you who weren’t among the (maybe ten) people who came to our first outing.

Dressed in Blue is a 1983 documentary that follows the daily lives of six trans women, most of whom are sex workers, living in Madrid. Remastered and internationally distributed for the first time in 2022, the film allows each woman to describe her life and relationship to gender and sexuality and politics on her own terms, never falling into the trap of trying to create a single narrative of trans womanhood in post-Franco Spain.

Our preceding short is Jewel’s Darl, a nuanced t4t love story that was commissioned by the NZ film commission and showed on free-to-air TV (!) in Aotearoa in 1987. It stars the late great Georgina Beyer, a Māori trans woman who moved from survival sex work into acting and then into politics, where her tireless advocacy and testimony directly led to the decriminalisation of sex work in Aotearoa. We’re excited to share some of her work with an international crowd.
